Abstract

Cerium ammonium nitrate demonstrate impressive advantages of having low toxicity, reasonably soluble in many organic media, air stable, easily handled which makes them ideal choices as catalyst. In recent years, cerium (IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) a one electron oxidant has been widely used in organic chemistry for wide range of oxidative reactions. Use of CAN as catalyst has gained popularity in many valued organic transformations viz oxidation, condensation, cycloaddition, isomerization. The review focuses on the scope of CAN as catalyst for the synthesis of various heterocyclic compounds.
